About the university

About Anglia Ruskin University

Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) began life in 1858 as the Cambridge School of Art, founded by William John Beamont. It became Anglia Polytechnic after merging with the Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology and the Essex Institute of Higher Education, gained university status in 1992, and took its present name in 2005 in honour of John Ruskin, who gave the school its inaugural address.

Today it teaches around 34,400 students across four faculties: Business and Law; Arts, Humanities, Education and Social Sciences; Health, Medicine and Social Care; and Science and Engineering. ARU is an applied, career-focused university rather than a research-first one, which suits students who want practical teaching, placements and employability support alongside their degree.

  • Named University of the Year 2023 by Times Higher Education
  • Lord Ashcroft International Business School, one of the largest business schools in the East of England
  • Strong provision in nursing, health and medical sciences
  • Dedicated international student support team

Where you would study

Anglia Ruskin University Campuses

ARU teaches across five sites. The campus matters: it decides your living costs, your commute and, for some subjects, whether the course is offered at all.

Cambridge

The original and main campus, a short walk from the city centre. Home to most subject areas, the Mumford Theatre and one of only a handful of optometry schools in the UK. Living costs in Cambridge are higher than the other sites.

Chelmsford

Home to the School of Medicine, medical science SuperLabs and the Lord Ashcroft Building. Strong in medicine, health, business, law, engineering and computing. Around 35 minutes by train from London Liverpool Street.

Peterborough

ARU Peterborough opened to students in September 2022 and is the newest site, with business, health, engineering, education and creative courses taught in purpose-built facilities. Living costs here are among the lowest of the five.

Writtle

ARU Writtle joined the university in February 2024 and specialises in agriculture, animal science, equine studies and horticulture, with a working farm and equine centre on site.

London

ARU London delivers business and management degrees in the capital for students who want to study in London itself.

Entry criteria

Anglia Ruskin University Entry Requirements for Nepalese Students

Academic requirements

Undergraduate courses typically ask for +2, A levels or an equivalent qualification with good grades. Taught postgraduate courses typically ask for a bachelor degree equivalent to a UK 2:2 honours degree, and some professional courses ask for relevant work experience as well. Requirements vary by course and campus, so send us your transcripts and we will confirm exactly what you need rather than guess.

English language requirements

Most undergraduate courses look for IELTS 6.0 overall and most taught postgraduate courses IELTS 6.5, with minimum scores in each component. PTE, TOEFL and other accepted tests are considered, and some courses will accept a Medium of Instruction letter. Compare what different universities ask for on our IELTS score comparison page.

Entry requirements change between intakes. Send your documents and we will check them against the current criteria before you pay anything.
