A top-up degree is the shortest legitimate route to a UK bachelor qualification, and for the right student it is the best value option on this entire website. The BA (Hons) Business Administration Top-Up is a single final year. You enter directly into year three, and you graduate with a full UK honours degree twelve months later.
It exists for students who already hold a higher national diploma, an advanced diploma, or two years of a bachelor degree, and who want the UK qualification without repeating work they have already done. For Nepalese students who started a bachelor at home and did not finish, or who hold a diploma from a UK awarding body, this is very often the smartest available move.
What you study
One academic year, typically two semesters plus a final project. Because it is the honours year, the level is high from day one and there is no gentle build up.
- Strategic management and business policy
- Leadership and organisational behaviour
- Operations and project management
- Contemporary issues in business, often including sustainability and digital transformation
- Research methods
- A dissertation or an applied business consultancy project
The consultancy project is worth taking seriously. It is the one substantial piece of work you will have to show employers, and unlike students on a three year degree you do not get a second chance at it.
Entry requirements from Nepal
Top-up entry is assessed on your prior qualification rather than on +2 results, which is what makes it accessible. Requirements vary by university, so treat these as the usual range.
- Academic: a completed HND, an advanced diploma, or successful completion of the first two years of a recognised bachelor degree, in a business or closely related subject. Some universities accept a three year Nepalese bachelor as entry to a masters instead, and we will tell you which of the two routes gives you more for your money.
- Subject match: the prior qualification usually has to be broadly in business. A diploma in an unrelated field normally will not map onto a business top-up.
- English: IELTS 6.0 overall with no individual band below 5.5 is the most common undergraduate requirement. Our IELTS score comparison covers the accepted alternatives.
- Finance: because it is one year, the total cost is roughly a third of a full degree. You still need to evidence tuition plus maintenance for the visa. See UK university fees for international students.
Where it leads
You finish with the same BA (Hons) as a student who spent three years on it. The certificate does not say top-up. That means the same graduate schemes, the same eligibility for the Graduate Route, and the same entry standard for a masters afterwards.

The one thing to check before you apply
Credit mapping. A top-up only works if the university accepts your specific prior qualification as equivalent to their first two years. Two students with what look like identical diplomas can get different answers from the same university, because the assessment is done on module content and credit volume, not on the certificate title.
Send us your transcript and diploma before you pay any deposit anywhere. We will get the credit assessment confirmed in writing first. Students who skip this step are the ones who end up being told in August that they have to start in year two after all.
