BA (Hons) Graphic Design

A BA (Hons) Graphic Design degree is about solving communication problems visually. Typography, layout, colour, image and increasingly motion and interface are the tools; the work is making an idea land clearly with a specific audience. It is the most commercially applied of the creative degrees, which is why it is also the one with the widest graduate job market.

Contemporary courses have moved well beyond print. Expect brand identity, digital and screen design, user interface work, packaging, motion graphics and design systems, taught alongside the traditional foundations of type and composition.

What you study

Three years, four with a placement. Studio based, project driven, and assessed almost entirely on portfolio work rather than exams.

  • Year one: typography, visual language and composition, colour and image making, design history and context, and industry-standard software.
  • Year two: brand identity systems, editorial and publication design, packaging, digital and UI design, motion graphics, and live client briefs.
  • Year three: a self-directed major project, professional practice covering pricing, contracts and freelancing, portfolio and degree show preparation.

The degree show and the final portfolio are what get you hired. Studios recruit from portfolios almost exclusively.

Entry requirements from Nepal

The figures below are what most of our partner universities ask for. They are not fixed, and individual universities set their own thresholds each intake, so treat this as a guide and let us confirm the exact position for the courses you shortlist.

  • Academic: +2, A-Levels or IB at roughly 60 per cent and above, though creative courses weigh the portfolio heavily and will often take a strong portfolio with slightly lower grades.
  • English: IELTS 6.0 overall with no band below 5.5 is typical, and some creative courses accept 5.5 overall. Many of our partner universities also accept PTE Academic, Duolingo, or a Medium of Instruction letter from Tribhuvan, Pokhara or Kathmandu University. See our IELTS score comparison and the routes that do not require IELTS.
  • Portfolio: this is the requirement students from Nepal most often miss. Creative courses assess a portfolio alongside your grades, usually submitted digitally and sometimes followed by a short online interview. Fifteen to twenty pieces that show your thinking, including rough work and development, count for more than a small number of finished images. Start assembling it months before you apply and we will review it with you before it goes anywhere.
  • Study gap: most universities accept a gap, commonly up to five years and sometimes up to ten, as long as you can account for the time.
  • Finance: the student visa requires evidence of your first year tuition plus living costs, currently 1,529 pounds a month for London and 1,171 pounds a month elsewhere, held for nine months. Our page on UK university fees for international students sets out the detail.

Where the degree leads

  • Design studios and creative agencies
  • In-house brand and marketing teams
  • Digital product and UI design, which pays best and is growing fastest
  • Publishing and editorial design
  • Packaging and retail design
  • Freelance practice, which a large share of graduates combine with employed work
  • Motion graphics and animation

An honest view for students from Nepal

Graphic design is the creative subject with the most realistic commercial return, and the skills are immediately usable at home: Nepal digital economy, advertising sector and startup scene all need designers, and remote freelance work for international clients is a genuine option that requires no visa at all.

The caution is that the industry hires on portfolio, not on the degree certificate. Students who treat every brief as a portfolio piece do well. Students who do the minimum to pass graduate with a qualification and nothing to show.
