BEng and MEng (Hons) Engineering

Engineering is the largest and most consistently employable degree family in the UK, and it is one of the strongest choices a Nepalese student with good mathematics and physics can make. It is also the subject area where students most often apply to the wrong course, because the branches differ far more than their shared name suggests.

This page covers the main routes and how to choose between them. Once you know which branch fits, we will match you to universities that run it and that accept students at your level.

The main branches

  • Civil and structural: buildings, bridges, roads, water and earthquake resilient design. The most directly applicable branch for anyone intending to work in Nepal, given the construction and infrastructure programme and the seismic context.
  • Mechanical: machines, thermodynamics, materials and manufacturing. The broadest branch and the one that keeps the most doors open.
  • Electrical and electronic: power systems, control, circuits and embedded hardware. Directly relevant to Nepal hydropower and grid development.
  • Computer and software engineering: systems, networks and software at engineering rigour rather than as pure computer science.
  • Chemical: process design, reactions at industrial scale, energy and pharmaceuticals.
  • Aerospace, automotive and mechatronics: specialisms usually built on a mechanical foundation.

BEng or MEng, and why it matters for your career

This is the decision students most often get wrong, so it is worth understanding before you apply.

A BEng is three years. An MEng is four and is an integrated masters. The difference is not merely length. Under the Engineering Council framework, an accredited bachelor degree can fully satisfy the academic requirement for Incorporated Engineer registration, but a BEng on its own is generally accredited as only partially meeting the academic requirement for Chartered Engineer. Reaching CEng normally needs further learning on top, most straightforwardly an accredited masters such as the MEng.

Chartered status matters for senior technical and consultancy roles and is recognised internationally. If you intend to build a long engineering career, the extra year of an MEng is usually the cheaper way to get there than doing a separate masters later. Check that any course you consider is accredited by a professional engineering institution, and ask us to confirm it before you accept an offer.

Entry requirements from Nepal

The figures below are what most of our partner universities ask for. Individual universities set their own thresholds each intake, so treat this as a guide and let us confirm the exact position for the courses you shortlist.

  • Academic: +2, A-Levels or IB at roughly 60 to 65 per cent and above. Mathematics and physics at +2 are normally both required and this is rarely negotiable, because the first year assumes them. An international foundation year in engineering is the standard route for students who need to strengthen those subjects.
  • English: IELTS 6.0 overall with no band below 5.5 is the common undergraduate requirement, and some universities ask 6.5. PTE Academic, Duolingo and Medium of Instruction letters are widely accepted; see our IELTS score comparison and the routes that do not need IELTS.
  • Study gap: most universities accept a gap, commonly up to five years and sometimes up to ten, as long as you can account for the time.
  • Finance: the student visa requires evidence of your first year tuition plus living costs, currently 1,529 pounds a month for London and 1,171 pounds a month elsewhere, held for nine months. Our page on UK university fees for international students sets out the detail.

Where engineering degrees lead

  • Design, project and site engineering across construction, manufacturing and energy
  • Consultancy engineering, which is where much of the UK graduate recruitment sits
  • Energy, including renewables, which is expanding in both the UK and Nepal
  • Water, environment and infrastructure
  • Manufacturing and production management
  • Technical roles in transport, aerospace and automotive
  • Research and postgraduate study

Engineering occupations have appeared on UK shortage lists for years, which makes this one of the more realistic subject areas for moving from a student visa to the Graduate Route and then to sponsored employment. Placement years are common and are the single best thing you can do for your employability.

Why this suits students from Nepal particularly well

Few countries give an engineer a more obvious set of problems to come home to. Nepal is building hydropower at scale, rebuilding and upgrading infrastructure in a seismically active landscape, extending its road and transmission networks, and urbanising quickly. Civil, structural and electrical engineers with international training and chartered status are in genuine demand.

Students planning to return should weight their option modules and final year project towards the problems they will actually face, and should take the accreditation question seriously, because chartered status recognised through the Engineering Council carries weight internationally.

Related courses on this site include artificial intelligence and robotics and business information systems.

Where Real Dreams comes in

We have been placing students from Nepal in UK universities since 2003. Bring us your academic documents and we will be candid about your prospects for engineering rather than steering you towards whichever university suits us. That includes telling you when a different course would serve you better.

Tell us your +2 mathematics and physics marks when you write. For engineering those two numbers do more to determine your options than anything else on your transcript.

Counselling is free and there is no obligation. Our offices are in Kathmandu, Chitwan, Pokhara, Butwal and Bhairahawa, with a further office in London. Get in touch when you are ready, start an application, or look through the full course list.
