BSc (Hons) Artificial Intelligence and Robotics

Artificial intelligence stopped being a specialist research field and became infrastructure. A BSc (Hons) Artificial Intelligence and Robotics degree sits at the point where software that makes decisions meets hardware that acts on them, and it is one of the few undergraduate subjects where the demand for graduates has been growing faster than universities can supply them.

The robotics half matters more than students expect. Plenty of universities teach AI as pure software. Pairing it with robotics forces you to deal with the physical world, which is messy: sensors are noisy, actuators are imprecise, and a model that scores well on clean data can still drive a robot into a wall. Employers in automation, manufacturing and autonomous systems value graduates who have had to solve that.

What you study

Three years, four with an industrial placement. Programming is the spine of the course and starts in week one.

  • Year one: programming fundamentals, usually in Python and C or C++, mathematics for computing, discrete structures, computer systems and architecture, and an introduction to robotics hardware.
  • Year two: algorithms and data structures, machine learning, computer vision, embedded systems and control, sensors and signal processing, and robot operating systems.
  • Year three: deep learning and neural networks, natural language processing, autonomous systems and path planning, human robot interaction, AI ethics and safety, and a substantial individual project.

The final year project is what employers read first. Students who build something that works, and can explain the decisions behind it, get interviews.

Entry requirements from Nepal

Requirements vary between universities and can change from one intake to the next, so treat the figures below as the usual range rather than a promise. We check your documents against each university current criteria before we submit anything.

  • Academic: +2, A-Levels or IB with roughly 60 per cent and above for direct entry into year one. Students who fall short are usually offered an international foundation year, which adds twelve months and then feeds into the same degree. Mathematics in +2 is normally required rather than merely preferred, and physics or computer science helps. If your maths is weak, an international foundation year is the sensible route rather than trying to catch up in year one.
  • English: IELTS 6.0 overall with no individual band below 5.5 is the most common undergraduate requirement. A number of our partner universities also accept PTE Academic, Duolingo or a Medium of Instruction letter from Tribhuvan, Pokhara or Kathmandu University. Our IELTS score comparison shows how the tests line up, and we list the routes that do not need IELTS.
  • Study gap: gaps are accepted by most universities, commonly up to five years and in some cases up to ten, provided you can account for the time.
  • Finance: for the student visa you must evidence your first year tuition plus living costs. Current maintenance rates are 1,529 pounds a month for London and 1,171 pounds a month elsewhere, held for nine months. See our page on UK university fees for international students.

Where the degree leads

  • Machine learning and AI engineering
  • Robotics and automation engineering in manufacturing, warehousing and agriculture
  • Computer vision and perception for autonomous vehicles and drones
  • Data science and analytics
  • Embedded systems and control engineering
  • Research, and progression to an MSc or PhD

Digital and engineering occupations have been on the UK shortage lists for years, which makes this one of the stronger degrees on our list for students who want a realistic path from study to sponsored employment. It also travels: Nepal software and outsourcing sector has grown steadily, and AI skills are in short supply there too.

An honest word on difficulty

This is the hardest degree on this page, and we would rather say so now than after you have paid a deposit. It is mathematically demanding, the workload is heavy, and students who arrive without solid programming and maths foundations often struggle badly in year two when machine learning starts.

If you enjoyed maths and physics in +2 and you already tinker with code, you will find this exhilarating. If you chose science because it was expected of you and you have never written a program, talk to us about business information systems or computing instead. There is no shame in that, and a good degree in a course that fits you is worth far more than a poor one in a fashionable subject.

Talk to Real Dreams before you apply

Real Dreams has been placing Nepalese students in UK universities since 2003, and course choice is where most applications are won or lost. Bring us your +2 or bachelor transcripts and we will tell you honestly which universities are likely to take you for artificial intelligence and robotics, which intake gives you the best chance, and what the first year really costs once tuition, deposit and maintenance funds are counted.

Counselling is free. Visit our offices in Kathmandu, Chitwan, Pokhara, Butwal or Bhairahawa, or our London office in the UK, and get in touch whenever you are ready. You can also start your application, read our guide to studying in the UK from Nepal, or browse the full course list.
