Nursing is the course Nepalese students ask us about more than any other, and it is also the one where the honest answer is the most complicated. There is no single nursing route to the UK. There are three, they suit completely different people, and choosing the wrong one wastes years. This page sets out all three plainly so you can work out which applies to you before you spend anything.
Route one: you are already a registered nurse in Nepal
If you hold a nursing qualification and registration from Nepal, your route to working as a nurse in the UK is not a university degree at all. It is direct registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, which involves an application, a computer based test, and a practical objective structured clinical examination taken in the UK, together with evidence of your qualification, practice and English.
This matters because students in this position sometimes enrol on an expensive taught masters believing it will register them. It will not. NMC registration is a separate regulatory process, and many nurses arrive through employer sponsorship rather than as students at all. If this is you, tell us and we will talk you through the registration route rather than selling you a course you do not need.
Route two: pre-registration nursing degree, to become a nurse from scratch
A BSc (Hons) Nursing approved by the NMC is three years and leads to registration in one of four fields: adult, child, mental health or learning disability nursing. Roughly half the programme is supervised clinical placement in hospitals and community settings.
Two hard constraints apply to international applicants and we will not pretend otherwise. First, places are limited. Clinical placement capacity is finite and a significant number of UK universities restrict or do not offer pre-registration nursing to international students at all, so the field of available universities is much narrower than for other subjects. Second, the English requirement is high. For NMC registration you need IELTS of at least 7.0 in reading, listening and speaking and at least 6.5 in writing, or OET grade B with at least C plus in writing. Universities generally align their entry requirement with that standard because a graduate who cannot register is of no use to anybody.
Those scores are demanding, and they are the most common reason an otherwise strong nursing application fails. If your English is not yet at that level, the sensible plan is to fix that first rather than apply and hope.
Route three: study health without registering as a nurse
Many students who ask about nursing actually want a career in healthcare rather than clinical nursing specifically, and for them the third route is often the better one. It has no registration barrier, no placement capacity limit and a normal English requirement.

Entry requirements from Nepal
Requirements differ between universities and can move from one intake to the next, so read the following as the usual range rather than a guarantee. We check your documents against each university current criteria before anything is submitted.
- Academic: for a pre-registration nursing degree, +2 with biology at roughly 60 per cent and above, and universities look closely at any care or health experience. Requirements are set individually and nursing admissions are more selective than most subjects.
- English: this is the decisive requirement for nursing, not a formality. Expect to need IELTS 7.0 in reading, listening and speaking with 6.5 in writing, in line with the NMC registration standard. Some universities will consider OET grade B instead. The lower scores accepted for other subjects do not apply here.
- Interview and checks: nursing applicants are normally interviewed, and an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check plus occupational health clearance is required before placement.
- Study gap: most universities accept a gap, commonly up to five years and sometimes up to ten, as long as you can account for the time.
- Finance: the student visa requires evidence of your first year tuition plus living costs, currently 1,529 pounds a month for London and 1,171 pounds a month elsewhere, held for nine months. Our page on UK university fees for international students sets out the detail.
Our position, stated plainly
We would rather lose an application than take a fee from a student we think cannot get there. Nursing has the narrowest set of available universities and the highest English bar of anything on this website, and we will tell you honestly which of the three routes above fits your situation.
If you are already a registered nurse, ask us about registration rather than about courses. If you want to become a nurse and your English is strong, we will find you the universities that genuinely accept international applicants. If your goal is a healthcare career more broadly, route three will get you there faster and with far less risk.
