A BSc (Hons) Pharmaceutical and Chemical Sciences degree covers how medicines are designed, synthesised, formulated, tested and regulated. It is a chemistry degree with a pharmaceutical orientation, and it is aimed at the industry rather than at the pharmacy counter.
That distinction matters and we make it clearly with every applicant. This degree does not make you a pharmacist. Pharmacy in the UK is a regulated profession requiring an accredited MPharm degree followed by a registration year with the General Pharmaceutical Council. What this course does prepare you for is the research, development, manufacturing and regulatory side of the pharmaceutical industry, which employs far more science graduates than dispensing does.
What you study
Three years, four with an industrial placement. Placement years in pharmaceutical companies are common on this course and are the single best thing you can do for your employability.
- Year one: organic, inorganic and physical chemistry, biochemistry, cell biology, and analytical laboratory technique.
- Year two: medicinal chemistry and drug design, pharmacology, pharmaceutical analysis, spectroscopy and chromatography, and formulation science.
- Year three: advanced medicinal chemistry, drug delivery systems, pharmaceutical manufacturing and quality, regulatory affairs and good manufacturing practice, and a laboratory research project.
Entry requirements from Nepal
Requirements differ between universities and can move from one intake to the next, so read the following as the usual range rather than a guarantee. We check your documents against each university current criteria before anything is submitted.
- Academic: +2, A-Levels or IB at roughly 60 per cent and above for direct entry, with a foundation year available where the science background needs building. Chemistry in +2 is essential, and biology or mathematics alongside it is normally expected.
- English: IELTS 6.0 overall with no band below 5.5 is the common requirement. Many of our partner universities also accept PTE Academic, Duolingo, or a Medium of Instruction letter from Tribhuvan, Pokhara or Kathmandu University. See our IELTS score comparison and the routes that do not require IELTS.
- Study gap: most universities accept a gap, commonly up to five years and sometimes up to ten, as long as you can account for the time.
- Finance: the student visa requires evidence of your first year tuition plus living costs, currently 1,529 pounds a month for London and 1,171 pounds a month elsewhere, held for nine months. Our page on UK university fees for international students sets out the detail.
Where the degree leads
- Pharmaceutical research and development
- Analytical chemistry and quality control in pharmaceutical manufacturing
- Regulatory affairs, an area that is chronically short of qualified people
- Clinical trials support and pharmacovigilance
- Chemical, cosmetics and materials industries
- Postgraduate research towards an MSc or PhD
Nepal has a substantial domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing sector, and quality assurance and regulatory expertise is in demand there. This is one of the science degrees where returning home with a UK qualification has a clear and immediate application.
How it compares with related courses
If you want laboratory analysis with a criminal justice application, look at forensic science. If you are drawn to the molecular biology of disease rather than to synthesis and formulation, biochemistry is the better fit. This degree is the right choice for students whose strongest and most enjoyed subject at +2 was chemistry.
Where Real Dreams comes in
We have been placing students from Nepal in UK universities since 2003. Bring us your academic documents and we will be candid about your prospects for pharmaceutical and chemical sciences rather than encouraging you towards whichever university pays the most commission. That includes telling you when a different course would serve you better.
Counselling is free and there is no obligation. Our offices are in Kathmandu, Chitwan, Pokhara, Butwal and Bhairahawa, with our head office in London. Get in touch when you are ready, start an application, or look through the full course list.
