What You Actually Study
Most UK MSc Public Health courses run 12 months full time, with taught modules over two semesters and a dissertation over the summer. Some run as 15 or 18-month versions with an extended project or placement.
Core modules
Epidemiology, biostatistics, health promotion, global health, research methods and the social determinants of health.
Applied work
Health needs assessments, programme evaluation and policy analysis, usually using real datasets and case studies.
Dissertation
An independent research project, often on a topic from your own country — Nepali students frequently write on rural health access, nutrition or disaster response.
Specialisms
Some universities let you weight the course towards health management, global health or health data, which changes who will hire you afterwards.

Public health is one of the more flexible masters in terms of background, but universities vary on what counts as relevant. Let us check your transcripts before you apply.
- A bachelor degree equivalent to a UK 2:2 honours, commonly in health, life sciences or social sciences
- MBBS, BDS, BSc Nursing, BPharm, BPH and BSc Nutrition are all normally accepted
- Non-health degrees are sometimes accepted where you have relevant work experience
- IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each component is the common postgraduate bar; some courses ask higher
- Work experience is not usually required but strengthens a borderline application
Be clear in your statement of purpose about why public health rather than clinical practice. Admissions teams read a lot of applications that do not answer that question.

Where It Leads
Public health is a field, not a single job. The degree is valued in government, NGOs, research and increasingly in health data roles.
Typical roles
Programme officer and coordinator posts with NGOs and international agencies, health promotion, epidemiology support, monitoring and evaluation, and health service planning.
Back in Nepal
The degree carries real weight with INGOs, donor-funded health programmes and the public sector, particularly combined with fieldwork experience.
In the UK
Roles exist in local authority public health teams, the NHS and research, though many are competitive and some prefer UK experience or registration.
Important limit
An MSc Public Health does not qualify you to practise as a clinician, and it is not a route to NMC nursing registration or GMC registration. If clinical practice is your goal, this is the wrong course.

How long is an MSc Public Health in the UK?
Twelve months full time is standard. Fifteen and eighteen-month versions exist with an extended dissertation or placement, which some students prefer for the extra time in the UK.
Can I do MSc Public Health with a nursing or MBBS background?
Yes. Nursing, MBBS, BDS, pharmacy, nutrition and public health bachelors are all commonly accepted. So are some social science degrees where you have relevant experience.
Does an MSc Public Health let me work as a nurse or doctor in the UK?
No. It is an academic masters, not a clinical qualification, and confers no professional registration. Registration with the NMC or GMC is a separate process.
