UK Student visa for applicants from India
The Student visa has replaced the Tier 4 (General) student visa. Applicants normally need an unconditional offer from a licensed student sponsor and a CAS, evidence of the required funds, proof of English where required, a valid passport and any other evidence requested for their circumstances.
Applicants coming for more than six months may need a tuberculosis certificate from a Home Office-approved clinic if the relevant residence conditions apply. Applicants under 18 need appropriate parental consent and relationship evidence. Always use the current GOV.UK checklist for your application.
When to apply for a Student visa
When applying from outside the UK, the earliest application date is normally six months before the course starts. GOV.UK states that a decision is usually made within three weeks, but processing times can vary and additional checks may take longer. Apply only after receiving the CAS and confirm the current visa fee, healthcare surcharge and evidence rules on GOV.UK.
Tuition fees and living costs
There is no single UK tuition fee for international students. Fees vary substantially by university, course, level and intake, and laboratory or clinical programmes may cost more. Check the official course page and offer letter for the current fee, deposit and refund terms.
For Student visa financial evidence, current GOV.UK rules require eligible applicants to show outstanding course fees plus maintenance funds for up to nine months: £1,529 per month for study in London or £1,171 per month outside London. Under current GOV.UK rules, it lasts two years for most eligible applicants who apply on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months for those who apply on or after 1 January 2027. Eligible doctoral graduates receive three years. The Graduate visa cannot be extended, although an eligible person may be able to switch to another route such as the Skilled Worker visa.
